ATHiking...the Podcast

I've just come across this new-ish podcast. ATHiking...the Podcast, a podcast about hiking the Appalachian Trail.

So far there are only 4 episodes, with the latest being with Sarah from Freezer Bag Cooking.

I'm downloading them now; so haven't listened to any yet but should be good for the morning/afternoon commute.

Early Podzine

Bob has managed to post the latest Podzine a day early.

In this weeks Podzine, we hear about some great new cameras by Olympus especially made for the outdoors person, talk with a 'get away from it all' bed and breakfast in British Columbia run by a British couple and discuss rights of way and access issues with the British House Society. Plus of course our diary section and a fantastic new competition.

I have heard that the competition prize is a great piece of equipment but you'll need to download the podzine to find out what it is (I`m not telling).

Six; That's S.I.X!

It seems as Bob & Andy have been very busy of the last few weeks and today Podcast Bob has released Six new podcasts.

The first is the weekly podzine; highlights of this week's show are:

We meet Jed Yarnold and discuss tarpoligy, Vic Soloman who tells us about the new Manfrotto carbon fiber tripods and Kevin Ashton about the practicalities of using a sea kayak as a fishing platform. Plus of course, our What's On Diary and the chance to win one of the remaining VIP 10 pairs of tickets we have to give away for The Outdoors Show."

The other five are part of the Cicerone Press series

Cicerone Press - Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire contains Britain’s only coastal National Park, such is its beauty, with soaring rugged cliffs, tranquil inlets and broad sandy beaches. There is immense variety in both the scenery and natural life of the Pembrokeshire coast. Dennis and Jan Kelsall talk about their lifetime of exploration on foot, which can be equally satisfying for serious walkers and those more inclined to potter.

Cicerone Press - Photography

Photography and the outdoors could have been made for each other, yet we all sometimes find there is a disappointing miss-match between what we wanted to capture, and what we actually achieved! Jon Sparks has developed his youthful hobby into a professional career, and here he offers some valuable tips for outdoor enthusiasts, whatever their sport or destination.

Cicerone Press - Mark Richards Outdoor Writer

Mark Richards’ transition from full-time farmer to full-time outdoor writer has been a gradual one. In 1973, with the direct encouragement of Alfred Wainwright, he wrote his first walking guide to the Cotswold Way. Since then he has indulged his pleasure in exploring rural Britain by creating a range of walking guides, including guides to the Peak District, Hadrian’s Wall and more recently the ambitious series of ‘Fellranger’ guides to the Lake District, supported by ‘Great Mountain Days in the Lake District’, a new guide to 50 days out in the high fells.

Cicerone Press - Paddy Dillon Islomania

Islomania is defined as a craze for, or a strong attraction to islands… and Paddy Dillon has the bug! Paddy is a prolific outdoor writer with over 30 books to his name. Here we find out just how many islands he has visited (and walked all over!), and what makes island visits so very special. You can get loads of great holiday ideas here!

Cicerone Press - Paddy Dillon National Trails

Opened in 1965, the Pennine Way was Britain’s first national trail. Since then another 14 have been designated in England and Wales, with a further 4 in Scotland. Together they cover well over 5000 kilometres each one with unique qualities which explore the rich, scenic and historic countryside of Britain. Paddy Dillon has walked all the trails – twice! Here he talks about his love of the routes and his new guide, ‘The National Trails’ a complete compilation of all Britain’s National Trail walking routes.

As usual the all the podcasts can be downloaded via iTunes or your favourite podcatcher, or at The Outdoors Station website.

This should keep us all entertained for the next few days.

Podzine - Lord Smith Interview

Now up on the Outdoors Station and available via iTunes or your favourite podcast downloader.

Andy Howell interviews Lord Smith.

Lord Smith of Finsbury is now well known as the President of the Ramblers’ Association, but in 1997 - as plain Chris Smith MP - he became Culture Secretary in Tony Blair’s incoming government. Working with colleagues he paved the way for the introduction of the Access legislation that is now well used by ramblers and hillwalkers throughout England and Wales. In this interview we talk to Lord Smith about the 100 year fight to introduce a right to roam, consider how these laws might be extended further and how we can best give young people better opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Podzine and outdoors bloggers

This week's podzine is up at the Outdoors Station. Santa Bob describes this week's show as thus:

This week we chat with the on-line enthusiasts who are keeping a log of their activities and share their passion for their hobby for us all to enjoy. We catch up with Judy Armstrong on her return from her 4000 mile Via Alpina trip and meet some popular outdoor bloggers to find out why they do, what they do! Plus of course we announce the competition winner for the Lightwave rucksack and launch another exciting prize!

Of particular interest to me is a interview I did with Andy Howell; about the blogging scene.

This interview was done awhile back so I had forget most I what I was asked and answered.

John Hee also appears in this show; and more bloggers will appear in later Podzines.

Podcast update

Remember I said that Bob Cartwright AKA Podcast Bob was looking to have a weekly outdoors podcast; well it looks like today is the start of the new podcasts.

“New Style Weekly Podzine for Outdoors Fans!
Monday the 15th October see the launch of a new weekly audio magazine show The Podzine for outdoors fans everywhere. We want to reach enthusiasts on all levels everywhere and especially retailers! The more people we can reach, the more great programmes we can produce!

The first show, includes an interview with Inov-8 designer Graham Jordison for some background information about the new Rocklite 390 GTX and Chris Watts distributor of MSR gear in the UK, who explains what make the Reactor stove so efficient. Plus there’s a head to head review of Novembers Trail and TGO Magazine, a what’s on diary for the next few weeks and a competition win some some great Golite products!“

As usual the podcasts can be downloaded from The Outdoors Station or your favourite podcatcher.

Saturday, 21 April 2007

Bob's latest podcast is about some of the equipment, he will be taking with him to the Backpackers Club Show and AGM at Bellingham.

There is also an interview with Bill Ballowe the maker of the White Box Stoves.

I was interested to see what this stove was like, so had a look around the 'net and found this review of the White Box Stove by Tinny at www.minibulldesign.com.

I`ve used an alcohol Pepsi stove before, my friend Keith (who made my G4) made quite a few of these and used them before going over to a brasslite stove..

The White Box Stove looks to be a much stronger stove than the Pepsi stove and a lot more durable.

I`m not sure how much fuel would be needed for a 10-day trip and whether the weight would work out more than a Pocket Rocket and a 250 canister.

New Podcasts

Bob has been busy uploading some new podcasts over the last few days.

The first, four are about the OS Outdoors Show, with interviews with Minister of Sport, Richard Caborn MP, Paramo and their new range.
Outdoors Show Part 1

An interesting inteview with Sue Harvey about Harvey's maps and what's new, X-socks, and Shewee.

Outdoor careers – Mountain Leader Training Board; Pete Ellis – walking holiday leader; news from Nikwax; Doune – wildereness and luxury in the Knoydart.

Rab’s new range for 2007; Agrofarm – natural protection against midgies and mosquitos; and catching-up with Kev Reynolds.

The Fifth and final one; at present. Is an interview Andy Howell has done with Ronald Turnbull about his new book; Three Peaks, Ten Tors.
Ronald does seem to have a quirky sense of humour when it comes to hillwalking and long distance walks. Overall this is a really enjoyable interview, so much so; that I have ordered the new book and his 'Book of the bivvy' Book.

The Outdoors Channel becomes......

The Outdoors Station

Last year; Bob Cartwright AKA Podcast Bob, started up a new website called 'The Outdoors Channel' this was set to be the new site for the new podcasts he was about to start producing.

These new podcasts started out with; The TGO Shows, The Outdoors Channel Magazine and the TOC Book Club.

All these shows were received well by the listening public. Unfortunately an American site already had the name and although they were not in the same field, they slapped a 'cease and desist' on Bob.

Well; Bob is back with his new website The Outdoors Station. There are several new podcasts under way and there is a rumour; that there will be prizes up for grabs. Infact the lastest podcast is giving listeners the chance to win tickets to the OS Outdoors Show.

The Outdoors Station will not only be audio podcasts but video casts (vidcasts) too, some of the first vidcasts will be on the GregoryPacks, the new Golite packs and Leki Poles, plus the 'famous' Tarp Video (this was a victim of the 'cease & desist').

Another feature of the new site; is to allow bloggers and other interested parties to download the html links to the podcasts and post them on their sites.

So here is the first podcast from The Outdoors Station.
